Many modern garage door remotes are simple to program. Pretty much any garage door opener that is less than 30 years old will have some version of “learn code” or “rolling code” technology. In most cases, all you have to do is press the “learn” button, then click your remote. Done.
But of course it isn’t always that easy. There are universal garage remotes that will work for any brand. Furthermore, Genie, LiftMaster, and Chamberlain make remotes that while not compatible with other brands, will work with older models(going back to the 1980’s and earlier) of the same brand. These require a few extra steps.
Some people have a hard time finding the right brand remote for their door. Be sure to check out this explainer about the compatibility of garage door brands. Many use identical parts and remotes.
